The Interesting History of the Inflatable Penile Prosthesis
Ever wonder where inflatable penile prosthesis came from? If it had pull-through strings and rear tip extenders? We did and we set out to get some answers.
The inflatable penile prosthesis was invented at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. It was developed, refined, and popularized by Brantley Scott, the urologist pictured at right who became a larger than life figure at the center of all kinds of wanted and unwanted attention. Let's just say that his innovations were not greeted warmly by his peers.
David Mobley, MD was a young surgeon working with Dr. Scott. As he tells it, the inflatable penile prosthesis was a derivative of Dr. Scott's efforts to devise an artificial urinary sphincter to control urinary incontinence. In this short interview, he reminisces about his days working with Dr. Scott and shares his palpable reverence for the man, inventor, and surgeon. To get even more detail of this rich and delightful history, read Dr. Mobley's article as published recently in the Asian Journal of Andrology.
